Whether you’re a frequent or occasional traveler, packing is that one chore nobody ever looks forward to. And to show you just how true that statement is, just go on the google search engine and type ‘Packing tips” and see how many articles have been written on that single topic alone over the years. Just goes to show that there is no amount of tips out there that will ever prepare you for packing. However, one thing stands out from all those articles and that is the need to plan ahead because as cliche as you may think the phrase “Failing to plan is planning to fail” is, just wait until your 36,000 ft up the sky halfway to your destination and you suddenly remember not packing something as important as your prescription medication, phone or laptop charger, glasses, contact lenses, or even extra underwear. The list is endless.
This is why there is always the need and space for one more packing list article,( like this one,) so let’s get right into it, shall we?
If you are planning to visit Lamu, here are some essential items you should pack:
- Camera – Starting with this one because… Have you been to Lamu? Or seen photos of it online? My oh my, the place is gorgeous! Everything in that town seems to be oozing with eccentricity, begging to be captured and frozen in a picture…Now, why would anyone want to miss out on capturing all that history and beauty when it’s as simple as bringing your camera along?!
- Light and breathable clothing. Lamu being a coastal town, has a hot and humid climate most of the time. You will want to pack light and breathable clothing (made from cotton, and linen,) that allows air circulation.
- Sun protection – If you’ve not been living under a rock then you know how bad an impact direct sunlight rays can have on your skin and eyes more so in Lamu (a coastal town) where the Sun shines brighter and hotter If I may add. So pack yourself some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. You will feel more at ease especially when out and about.
- Swimsuit and a beach towel/blanket because whether you can swim or not, you won’t be able to resist the beautiful waters of the ocean or pool. At least the heat won’t let you. And if you are going to spend time by the beach, you will like it more if you can spread a blanket, sit or lie down and just enjoy the view.
- Power bank – If you’ve been around gadgets for some time, you know they tend to go off on you at the least expected moment so cancel the surprise and pack yourself a power bank or two for your camera and phone so that none of those magical moments goes uncaptured.
- Comfortable shoes – Lamu’s narrow, winding streets are not suitable for high heels or flip-flops. Pack comfortable walking shoes like sandals or sneakers.
- Insect repellent – Mosquitoes and other biting insects are prevalent in Lamu. Make sure to pack insect repellent to protect yourself from the ever-menacing mosquitos.
- Water bottle – You want to stay hydrated as much as possible whether moving around or staying in your hotel/Airbnb rental. Packing a reusable water bottle that you can refill throughout the day is definitely important.
- Cash and travel documents – Make sure to pack your passport, visa (if required), and cash in local currency to pay for food, transportation, and souvenirs. It’s also a good idea to carry a photocopy of your passport and other important documents in case of loss or theft.
- Dry deodorant – Hot and humid climate means lots of sweating. You will need a trusted companion to keep you smelling fresh and pleasant all day long.
- Waterproof make-up -If you live by the mantra “But first…Makeup” then you want to keep it light and waterproof on these beachy sides.
- Hair bands, scrunchies, and pins. A combination of humidity and sea breeze will have your hair in a constant mess especially if it’s long. So rather than spend time sweeping it off of your face and neck, you’re better off packing some lovely scrunchies or bands and having it neatly tied in a bun or ponytail and your hands all to yourself to use and enjoy as you, please.
- Waterproof casings for your gadgets because beachy destinations = lots of water and anything can happen, hence you want to take extra precautions and protect your precious gadgets from damage.
- Books and magazines. Entertainment. Entertainment, entertainment! Need I say more? Whether you’re lying down by the sandy shores, in your room, or on board a flight, the list of places in which a book or magazine will come in handy is endless.
- Wipes/Napkins – There’s not one place where these hygiene essentials don’t come in handy, especially during these Covid times. It’s always a great idea to pack as much as you possibly can.
Last but not least, don’t forget to pack all your good vibes, if you’re running low on them however, worry not, Lamu has plenty of it in store for you. You will have the time of your life and leave rejuvenated, with memories to last you a lifetime!
